Energy Generation in SF

San Francisco’s Power comes from a variety of sources. One of which is the Mirant Corporation’s Natural Gas Power Generation Plant located in Potrero Hill. Here is some information about them taken from their website:

Potrero Hill Generating Plant Power Points

  • Location: San Francisco
  • Capacity: 362 megawatts
  • Equivalent number of homes served: 362,000
  • Fuel: Natural gas (oil backup) and distillate
  • Customers: Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E)
  • Ownership: Mirant 100%
  • Began service: Oldest units began in 1960; Mirant acquired
    plant in 1999
  • Number of employees: 34
  • Contact: Dave Hansell415 695 2607

Environmental Highlights

  • With the exception of the Potrero jets, Potrero units are governed
by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District’s Rule 9-11, and consistently
    comply with air emission standards.
  • Implementation of Rule 9-11 has resulted in a more than 90% reduction
    in nitrogen oxide (NOx).
  • Installation of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) equipment at Potrero
is projected to reduce NOx emissions by over
    90%.
  • Since taking ownership of Potrero in 1999, Mirant has invested over
$26 million to reduce NOx emissions at the
    plant.
  • Mirant successfully completed a “clean closure” of the plant’s
waste ponds, removing all hazardous waste in accordance with California
    regulations.
  • Mirant continues to pursue technologies and operating strategies that
    will reduce air emissions.
